Why Ordinary Works on Clarinet

The clarinet’s combination of warmth, clarity, and expressive flexibility makes it a natural fit for Ordinary. Its darker lower register can give the quieter sections an intimate and personal quality, while its clear upper voice provides the intensity needed for the song’s soaring emotional peaks.

The instrument’s ability to sustain long, smooth melodic lines is particularly valuable in this arrangement. With steady air support and carefully shaped dynamics, the clarinet can imitate the natural flow and emotional direction of a singer.

As the song develops, the performer can gradually move from a restrained, delicate tone toward a broader and more resonant sound. This mirrors the emotional progression of the music and makes the arrival of the chorus especially effective.

Without vocals, the clarinet becomes the storyteller. Every crescendo, phrase ending, articulation, and change of tone can help communicate the emotional character of the song.

Performance Tips

Think Like a Singer:
Approach the melody as a vocal line. Shape complete phrases, choose natural breathing points, and allow important notes to lead toward the emotional peaks.

Use the Clarinet’s Warm Lower Register:
Let softer sections benefit from the rich and intimate character of the chalumeau register whenever the arrangement allows.

Maintain Smooth Air Support:
Keep the air moving consistently through longer phrases so the melody remains connected and the tone stays centered.

Keep Register Changes Seamless:
Pay attention to transitions between registers so they feel like part of one continuous melodic line rather than separate sections.

Build Gradually Toward the Chorus:
Use controlled crescendos, stronger air support, and broader phrasing to increase emotional intensity as the song develops.

Save Your Biggest Sound:
Avoid reaching maximum intensity too early. Reserve your strongest projection and most expressive tone for the later choruses and emotional climax.
